Project Misik was founded in 2010

In 2021, Project Misik has many different limbs.

Each asks you to walk with us towards reconnection, through music.

Project Misik: In The Yard

“THE YARD”:

a (safe*, outdoor) space where we** gather, build community, and celebrate us***

* socially distancing, sanitizing shared instruments, prioritizing respect for all

** “all-a-we” — everybody is welcome!

*** particularly, musics/cultures/stories of black & brown folkx among us

Project Misik, "In the Yard," invites neighbors, YOU/US - all-a-we, to come together, to create and to enjoy music, dance, and each other. We want to create, in the yard, a "safe" space, in which we BIPOC folkx, and our neighbors, can gather. Creating “safe” (meaning respectful to all in attendance) spaces, we will use the power of our collective music-making to guide our conversations and hold our connections within and across racial lines. We will be focused on the storied music of African diasporic peoples and, connecting through this music, will strive to bring joy through, connection in, and deeper understanding of the ways making space for “black lives (to) matter” is an essential act of making all lives matter a reality.

In Project Misik "In the Yard,” Zili Misik and our featured guests will engage Boston neighbors in in-person & live-streamed performances & interactive workshops, demonstrating 1) connections in Boston communities through African diasporic music, 2) that black lives matter.

In workshops and performances, Zili will feature four guest artists:

Becky Bass (w/ steel pan, which comes from the West Indies, originally Trinidad & Tobago),

Peniel Guerrier (w/ Haitian drum & dance),

Solomon Murungu (w/ mbira, which comes from Zimbabwe),

and Harrison Tei (w/ Ghanaian drum & dance).
